The Engagement: Told By My Fiance Part 2
YOU CANNOT BE SELFISH IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS. Obviously I didn’t realize I wasn’t considering Aubs feelings when I commented on her wants, it just sorta, came out. Instead of talking about the issue we went on an almost silent drive around Utah Lake. Once we were almost home, we started talking about what had happened and what the problem really was. It was much, much more than what I had stated about her wants. In addition, it gave me a chance to think about what was going on in my life and what it was that I truly wanted.
It wasn’t money, cars, a nice big house or honestly even the church. It was my beautiful freckle-faced girlfriend that was sitting right beside me, that had busted her butt to do anything that I wanted. Unfortunately I had taken that for granted. It was this argument, in the middle of January, that made me realize who I have, who I want and why exactly I wanted her.
Aubs and I had been looking at rings before, but not for the last couple months. We first went into Jared and we weren’t too impressed. After a couple others, we stumbled across Wilson Diamonds in Provo and they had the perfect one for her. I guess that’s why both of my other brothers also got their wives rings there.
Everybody in my family knew I was going to ask her to marry me. It was just a matter of time. Even my Dad at one point early in our relationship said, “you look like a Phelps” (Aubrey edit: this was the FIRST thing his dad ever said to me). With all the support my family and friends had given me with Aubrey, and the obvious love that I have for her, I decided to finally go back to Wilson and get her ring ordered (March 13th).
I had to wait a week to get it because there were a few alterations that were needed but I had it for the day that I needed it, March 20th – the day I proposed.
It was a perfect morning. Definitely “propose-to-your-hot-girlfriend” type of weather. To start that day I went to breakfast with my Dad, then over to my sisters to see my new niece and and to show her the ring. Since I had the ring on me, and I was heading over to Aubs afterward, I had Lindsay take the ring back to my house so Aubrey couldn’t accidentally find it. We had a fun day. We went to the Home and Garden Expo and an interesting Rock/Gem Expo.
After thinking about how tonight was going to happen over and over in my head, I quickly began to ask my self how I was going to get the ring, from my house, without Aubrey knowing so we can go to our dinner up in Salt Lake? The miniature Kevin with a trident on my shoulder poofed out from a cloud of smoke and suggested I flat out lie to her. Not the best way to show my love and honesty, but it’ll work!
I got my phone out, put it to my ear and answered a phone call from my Brother. He said that he needed me to help him move the bed in his home so he can make room for his new baby crib. Well, that’s what Aubrey thought anyways. This was just a horrible thought out plan to get away from her for a couple hours so I can get everything together. Then she started asking questions.
“What are you doing?”
“Where are you taking it?”
“Why can’t somebody else help?”
“Can I come?”
Some of them got tricky to answer, “The mattress will be taking up the whole car except two seats for Bryan and I, so I don’t know where you’d go”. Aubs believed it, and that’s all that mattered.
Once I took care of everything, I went to her parents house to pick her up, we got dressed and we went to my high-school buddies wedding reception. Ironic I know. I started talking to one of my good friends that I grew up with, his name is Chad. He was asking Aub and I all these questions on if we’re going to get married and whatnot. I stayed silent but Aubrey got nervous and said a bunch of stuff that she wasn’t too sure of. At this point, it’s going on 7:30 and we need to get going. Our reservation after all is at 8:30 in Salt Lake…
