The Engagement: Told By My Fiance Part 3
ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELT when driving 80-85 on the freeway, weaving in and out of traffic. It probably wasn’t the best idea by myself but I needed to get to dinner. We had reservations at a fancy-schmancy restaurant and I didn’t want to be late. Everything was all planned out and I didn’t want to call an audible should they fill our reservation with a different couple. We got there about 10 minutes late, and I only had to give 1 finger during this adventure to the d-bag that wouldn’t let me merge.
“Should I bring my purse” Aub asked. “Nah, just your jacket” I said. I had to go to my trunk to grab my jacket that had a little surprise in the left pocket. I didn’t put it on, I just scrunched it up and held it so she couldn’t accidentally touch the left pocket. We got up to the 10th floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building where we ate at The Roof. They took us past Alex, the pianist, and sat us by the window, right above the Salt Lake City Temple. It was a great view, but nothing compared to the time she got me a helicopter ride for my birthday.
After Aub got back from the unusually long restroom break (now I know why it was so long), we got up and went to the buffet, that was full of gourmet food. I got myself a slice of ham and prime rib, then a spoonful of pasta and some excellent mashed potatoes. We got full pretty fast since neither of us probably had an appetite anyways. I asked for the check, paid it and went to the bathroom so I could put on my jacket and make sure I still had a certain something.
“It’s freaking freezing” I stated once we went through the revolving doors onto the sidewalk. Obviously, by this time, she probably figured I was going to propose. Every now and then I can get something past Aubs, but she’s actually very observant and smart. “Did you wanna go see those horses?” I asked knowing she’d say yes. So we walked over to them and just as we got there, some hoochies and their immature dates got in line before us. They were just coming from a dance, they weren’t really hoochies, I just had a plan, and I needed to stick to it! As soon as these guys and their hoochie dates got into their carriage, the driver notified us that there was another waiting on the West side of Temple Square. We rushed through the amazing grounds, talked to the driver and quickly jumped on board. Normally I would have let Aubs go first and helped her up onto the carriage, but the “you-know-what” was in the left pocket, and I didn’t want her to suspect it so I quickly jumped in before her.
As we were riding in the back of this carriage, it was getting closer, and closer, to the “time”. The driver took us up to Memory Grove which is lined with old houses and huge trees. I believe the tornado that ripped through Salt Lake also uprooted some ancient trees there too.
It was time, no more waiting, no more shenanigans. We had wanted to be engaged for a while before this, so it was finally time that it happen. Prior in the day when I lied to Aub about helping my brother, I had gone to get something that I made her. It was a note of sorts, that summed up exactly how I feel about her. She read it out loud as I requested, but had to pause a couple times since it was pretty dark. Once she got to the end, I finished with the simple words of, “Will you marry me?”
She was stunned. She was the happiest I’ve ever seen her. She quickly told me yes and gave me a hug. The only way I can compare it, was when I first talked to her. I was so nervous back in October, as I stayed later in class, just to ask her a simple Math question. And even this night, when I had to ask her a simple question I was very nervous and very excited. As we left Memory Grove to go back to the Temple grounds, I told her about the week and some explanations as to why I had been acting differently. I told her about how everybody BUT her knew about this day.
She and I are very happy currently and will figure out all the details of the wedding and honeymoon later. For now, we’re just relaxing and being happy together.
Thank you to my parents, Lindsay, Bryan and Steve for approving of my perfect Fiancee. Thank you to Aubrey’s parents for giving her away even though I’m a dork, and thank you to Ashley and Neil for accepting me and letting me play with Aspen so much. Aubs family is awesome, I’m excited to become a part of it

So you and Aubrey could go into writing books together I’ve decided. You are as funny as she is. The Roof doesn’t hold the most pleasant memories for me. That is where Ryan took his ex-girlfriend for prom (in a limo)…..still hasn’t taken me there. boo hoo! Can’t wait to hear the final plans for the wedding!
Thank you for always playing with Aspen. I came this close to calling you guys last night to save me from her. Im so happy for you guys!
Just so you know, you are not a dork. I cannot believe that you wrote that. You know that personal joke anyways. Your new father in law is just a character and loves to make jokes. We are very pleased and happy that you are going to be one of our own. We are also happy that you except us for who we are even if our beliefs are different. That means alot to us honestly. Family is family and it doesn’t matter, and love is love.
